Whether a burner will not light, the igniter keeps clicking or the flame keeps going out, the guide below explains the common causes and when to call a technician. If you smell gas, start with the safety steps further down this page.

Signs you need gas hob repairs

  • A burner will not light, or only lights with a match.
  • The igniter clicks constantly, even after the burner is lit.
  • The flame goes out when you let go of the knob.
  • Flames are yellow, uneven, lifting off the burner or very low.
  • Knobs are stiff, loose or will not turn.
  • The electric plates or ignition on a combination hob do not work.

Common gas hob faults we repair

Burner will not light

Spills and food debris can block the burner ports or cover the ignition electrode. Burner caps that are not seated properly also stop the gas from lighting evenly. If the burner is clean and correctly assembled, the problem may be the spark generator, the electrode or its wiring.

Igniter keeps clicking

Continuous clicking is often caused by moisture after cleaning or a spill, which usually clears once the hob has dried. If it continues, the cause may be a faulty ignition switch on the control knob, damaged wiring or a failing spark generator.

Flame goes out when you release the knob

Most modern gas hobs have a flame failure device. A thermocouple next to the burner senses the flame and keeps the gas valve open. If the thermocouple is dirty, out of position or worn, the hob shuts off the gas as soon as you let go of the knob.

Yellow, weak or uneven flames

A healthy flame is mostly blue. Yellow or ragged flames can point to blocked burner ports, misaligned caps or a problem with the gas pressure or regulator. These faults should be checked, because poor combustion is unsafe.

Stiff or loose knobs

Grease build-up or a worn gas tap can make knobs hard to turn. Do not force a stiff knob, as this can damage the valve.

Gas safety: what to do if you smell gas

  1. Turn off the burners and close the gas cylinder valve or the gas supply.
  2. Do not switch electrical lights or appliances on or off, and do not use open flames.
  3. Open doors and windows to let the gas clear.
  4. Leave the area. If the smell does not go away, contact a registered gas installer or your gas supplier before using the hob again.

In South Africa, gas installations must comply with SANS 10087-1. Work on the gas supply, and the certificate of conformity (CoC) for an installation, must be handled by a registered installer certified with LPGSASA or SAQCC Gas. Defy’s gas installation FAQ explains the requirements in more detail. Always ask to see the registration of anyone who works on your gas supply.

  • How many burners are affected.
  • The time the repair takes and your location within Gauteng.

Quick checks before you book

  • Make sure the gas cylinder is not empty and that the valve is open.

  • Check that the hob’s plug is switched on if it has electric ignition.
  • Wipe the ignition electrodes gently with a dry cloth.

Gas hob repairs FAQs

Why does my gas hob only light with a match?

The burner and gas supply are working, but the ignition system is not. This usually means a dirty or damaged electrode, a wiring fault or a failed spark generator.

Is it safe to use a hob with yellow flames?

It is best to have it checked. Yellow flames can be a sign of incomplete combustion.
